Will the character portrait always look the same unless we are on the paid version?

The character portrait will remain unchanged unless you modify the character's gender or use the paid version which includes access to the character layered image system.

How can I set a custom image for my character in dialogues and people view?

You can set a custom image for your character using the 'res/nadya.png' file or by selecting an icon set from the player/NPC customization options. This will be your character's image seen everywhere.

Why don't my changes in character customization apply when playing online?

This issue with character customization not applying is being fixed and should be resolved in the next update, expected tomorrow.
